Reminder to File for Homestead Exemption
Illinois State Law allows for several exemptions for homeowners to help reduce real estate taxes. Two of the most common exemptions are the homestead exemption and the Senior Citizen Exemption.
The Homestead Exemption requires that the property must be the primary residence of the owner/lessee on January 1st of the assessment year. It is likely that you completed the Homestead Exemption Form at closing, but if you have not, you can download the form HERE.
To qualify for the Senior Citizen Exemption, the property must be the owner's primary residence, and the owner must be 65 or older by December 31 of the assessment year. To apply for the Senior Citizen Exemption, download this form and follow the instructions.
You can find a complete list of exemptions on the Champaign County Assessment Office website, linked here.
